NEW DELHI :  : The tradition to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad as Eid Milad Un Nabi is widely followed in India. A holiday is also declared in some states to observe the event.

Eid-e-Milad Un Nabi 2023 also known as Eid Milad or Mawlid is being celebrated today on September 28 by a large section of the Muslim population across the world.

The Eid-e-Milad is celebrated to commemorates the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, believed to be the final messenger of Islam.

Eid Milad Un Nabi is observed on 12th Rabi’ al-awwal, the third month of Islamic lunar calendar. Islamic months last between 29 and 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon on the 29th night of each month.

On this day in 570, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born, and it is also the day he departed from the worldly realm.

Eid Milad Un Nabi is observed on 12th Rabi’ al-awwal, the third month of Islamic lunar calendar:

The most important aspect of the day is to focus on the teachings of Prophet Mohammed. Families gather together and prepare a feast, which is then served to the guests and is also meant to be donated to the poor.

Eid-e-Milad-un-nabi, a public holiday for most Muslim-majority countries, is a day for solemn reflection, an occasion to ponder upon the unfathomable depth of the Prophet’s teachings — teachings that are more pertinent today than ever before.

Several countries celebrate the day by taking out large processions in the street and by decorating their homes. Prayers are recited and sweets are distributed among the needy and stories of the Prophet are narrated.

The Shia community believes that on this day Prophet Muhammad had chosen Hazrat Ali as his successor. On the other hand, the Sunni community, on this day, hold pray meetings throughout the day.
